The Florence Nightingale-Mary Stanley controversy: some unpublished letters.
IN HER brief portrait of Mrs. Catherine Gladstone in 1956, Mrs. Georgina Battiscombe wrote that Mrs. Gladstone's efforts 'to be of some use in the [Crimean] war troubles' brought her into 'a most unfortunate collision' with Florence Nightingale when, under the influence of Mrs. Elizabeth Herbert, Mrs. Gladstone 'threw herself heart and soul ... into the good work of providing nurses for the mil...
متن کاملAlice Hamilton. A life in letters
upon manuscript sources, many not previously exploited and some in private hands. Insights abound into not only Simon's career, presented on a decidedly unheroic scale, but also the many lives he touched during these years including Hideyo Noguchi, William Osler, William Welch, and the author's uncle (and writer of reports on medical education), Abraham Flexner. If some of the description of la...
متن کاملHamilton decompositions of some line graphs
The main result of this paper completely settles Bermond's conjecture for bipartite graphs of odd degree by proving that if G is a bipartite (2k+1)-regular graph that is Hamilton decomposable, then the line graph, L(G), of G is also Hamilton decomposable. A similar result is obtained for 5-regular graphs, thus providing further evidence to support Bermond's conjecture.
متن کاملSome Further Remarks on Hamilton ’ s Principle
The development of the equations of motion for a mechanical ystem from Hamilton’s principle can be viewed as a problem in he calculus of variations when the constraints on the system are olonomic and the forces are derivable from a potential function. endering stationary the integral of the Lagrangian over a fixed nterval of time taken between two fixed points in configuration pace, then, yield...
متن کاملUnpublished Manuscript
We here review the evolutionary theory relevant to the question of human cooperation and compare the results to other theoretical perspectives. Then, we will summarize some of our own work, distilling a compound explanation that we believe gives a plausible account of human cooperation and selfishness. This account leans heavily on group selection on cultural variation but also includes lower l...
